We just finished a series in which these Means of Grace (Ordinances of God) were preached:
Matthew 4: 1-11 – the Temptations of Jesus – Fasting
John 3: 1-17 – Nicodemus at night – Searching (study of) the scriptures
John 4: 5-42 – The woman at the well – Expounding (preaching) the Word
John 9: 1-41 – The man born blind – Public (in community) worship of God
John 11: 1-45 – Raising of Lazarus – Prayer
And – the Supper of the Lord (Holy Communion), which we celebrate on all first Sundays.
The Means of Grace:
John Wesley began “United Societies” (including ‘bands’ and ‘classes’) in 1739
with three practices “to evidence the [people’s] desire of salvation” by
First: to Do No Harm;
Second: to Do Good; and
Thirdly: “By attending upon all the ordinances of God, such are:
The public worship of God.
The ministry of the Word, either read or expounded.
The Supper of the Lord.
Family and private prayer.
Searching the scriptures.
Fasting or abstinence.
These are the … rules of our societies… which we are taught of God to observe… in His written Word, which is the only rule, and the sufficient rule, both of our faith and practice…”
During the Season of Easter, let us continue to practice the “Means of Grace,” that we might grow always closer to God, to live like Christ, and to be inspired and to inspire by the Holy Spirit. The world has need of the Love of God shown to us in Jesus of Nazareth, the Christ. We are that love. He is Risen! He is Risen, Indeed!
