How Great Thou Art, UMH #77

Driving up the coast road.  What a blessing to be so close to the ocean.  The great ocean.  What is that song?  I Hope You Dance: “I hope you still feel small when you stand beside the ocean…”  I do.

And as I ponder its greatness, its unfathomable depths, its uncharted width and length and breadth (okay, I do know that it has probably been charted by now)…I think of the world that is the ocean, and am amazed at God’s many worlds.  I think of the end of Job…God does so much more than we know.

I see the gulls and other water birds, swooping low, skimming the surface, seeing below the mask of the water that is full of the sun’s reflection…seeing through the swells, catching dinner… sea birds: another world God made and understands.  And the rocks!  Striped in some places!  And the sand, with it’s creatures: bugs, crabs, the decay of bones and seaweed… God made; God loved.

“Oh, Lord, my God, when I in awesome wonder, consider all the worlds Thy hands have made…”

Fifteen years ago, I visited the Sequoias near Crescent City in Oregon…and as I drove into the park, with mist all around, and huge, beautiful ferns, which were still not nearly as huge and lovely as the trees, I thought, “What is man, that Thou art mindful of him, and the son of man, that Thou carest for him?”  (Ps. 8.4)  I mean, those Trees with the mist and the ferns: they were Magnificent!  I felt God speak to me: “You are of more value than many sparrows.” More value than the redwoods?  “Yes.”

“Are not two sparrows sold for a penny?  Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father…So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows.  (Mt. 10.29, 31).  Amazing.

When I left that place, after walking in the woods awhile, and singing (softly) some, the road took me down the coast.  The redwoods were to my left, the ocean was on my right, and it was sunset time.  I asked God, “What is your favorite medium?”  (As in art mediums: ocean?  Sunset colors?  Trees?)… and  God said to me, “People.  I love to see you change.” (As in growing; becoming)…  Really?  Yes.

God loves us.  More than redwoods; more than oceans; more than sunsets.  Really?  Yes.  Amazing.

Our God is an awesome God.  Who loves us no matter what.  All the time.  And Who is way more than we can imagine or understand.  But we don’t have to imagine or understand.  Like Job.

All we have to do is be.  And love God with all we have and are.  And love our neighbor as ourselves.

And love ourselves as God loves us; as Jesus loves us.  Jesus is “God with us.”  Healing. Teaching.  Loving.  Body broken for us.  Blood spilled for us as “a new covenant for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.”  Really.  You are worth more than many sparrows.  Jesus said so .
