“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but that very Spirit intercedes with sighs too deep for words. And God, who searches the heart, knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.” (Romans 5:26-27)
Sighs too deep for speaking; the Holy Spirit sighs with and for us…
Sarah thinking maybe it would never happen….sort of letting go even while she stood before our congregation on July 16th, lifting up Lori, and we all said, “Lord in Your mercy, Hear our prayer.”
And it was at that very time that Lori was in surgery to receive her new lungs.
One of my friends in Santa Fe worried about her son. One night when she was praying for him, she heard/felt God say to her, “Get out of the way, and let Me deal with him.” She did; and God did; and all was well.
A nun taught elementary school. She needed her feet to stop hurting. She went to a prayer group and they prayed for her. Her feet still hurt, but she could suddenly hear in her left ear, which she hadn’t been able to do since she was eight years old. Her shyness subsided. She began advocating for the elderly nuns. She changed jobs and didn’t stand on her feet so much anymore.
I prayed to give up a dream I didn’t know I’d had: “Okay, Lord, I won’t hope to come back to California to be near Mel and Darla, anymore. I’ll just stay in New Mexico. I’ll just continue to go where you send me.” God sent me back to California that same year.
Sometimes we have dreams we don’t even know we have. We have dreams we’ve forgotten for so long or have buried our hopes and desires so deeply that only our sighings remember. And the Spirit hears the prayers of our spirits, spoken in sighs, and then whispers those prayers right into the heart of God.
And God always answers prayers. Always. In God’s own way, In God’s own time, as God would have our lives fulfill God’s plans for us. Whatever is for our highest good. Whatever serves the greatest need. Whatever will bring the Kingdom closer to reality.
And we can assist. By praying however we know to pray. By getting out of the way. By knowing we can’t do anything about whatever it is. By surrendering. By trusting. “Rejoice Always. Pray Constantly. Give Thanks in all Circumstances . For this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus our Lord.” (I Thessalonians 5:16-18)
Hark! Our prayers are heard. Our deepest sighings are understood. God loves us and wants the very best for each one of us. Always. No Matter What. Jesus said, “Even I live by putting my trust in God.” (Hebrews 2:13) Gracious, Loving, Generous, Forgiving God: Hear the prayers of each heart, and in Your way, in Your time, answer them all, to Your glory. Thanks be to God. Amen.
